Week Five Speakers: Jonathan and Mary Margaret Sprinkle

We are delighted to support the ongoing ministry of the Stewardship Committee, by sharing why we give to Christ Church. One of Jonathan’s favorite verses from Phillipians (4:4) is,

“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”

We try to live this verse in all aspects of our lives.

There are many things at Christ Church that allow us to rejoice. Learning how members of our parish are part of transformation within our community. Hearing our 2 teenage boys singing carols in the car on the way home from choral evensong. Quietly reflecting on the Valley of the Dry Bones and shortly—suddenly—later, proclaiming Alleluia! at the top of our lungs, and ringing our bells as part of the Great Vigil of Easter.

The giving of our time, talent, and treasure, is less of a means to fill up a thermometer. We give without expecting to receive. We give without thinking about, “What could have gone better at that coffee hour?” We give without asking for change: we give because knowing that by our involvement, we can be part of change, and transformation. We give because we know that our commitment helps God’s one holy catholic and apostolic church to fulfill its mission. Our mission: to love and serve the Lord.

Our approach came a few years ago, while Jonathan was part of a stewardship commission at our parish in Tucson. It was not as easy as just deciding to be joyful, but rather was a result of prayerfully considering, “How can we give more joyfully?” Fortunately, a great answer is just a verse away in Phillipians (4:6):

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

We ask each of you to prayerfully take up the same charge. And that the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds, in Christ Jesus.
