2026 Icon Retreat: February 23-27
This season’s Icon Retreat will be held at Christ Church Cathedral, 900 Broadway, Monday through Friday, February 23-27, 2026. The retreat will meet Monday through Thursday that week from 10:00 AM-6:00 PM and Friday from 10:00 AM-3:00 PM. This year we are offering two icons: Christ, the Architect and Christ, the Good Shepherd.
The Icon Writing Retreat is a guided process of creating an icon while learning about the spiritual meaning of icons. Painting is done in a meditative atmosphere in a small class environment. The image is traced on a blank wood board pretreated with gesso, and a progression from darker base colors to lighter tones makes the image gradually appear out of the flat surface. Our instructor, iconographer Teresa Harrison, accommodates any skill level as she guides us through the process—you don’t have to be an artist to create a beautiful icon you will be proud of!
A deeply talented, spiritual person, Teresa Harrison has been a student of iconography for over 30 years and has been teaching icon painting for more than two decades all over the U.S. and Central America. We are grateful she has led retreats at here at the Cathedral for 16 of those years.
The cost for the full week is $499, and all materials are provided (Jo Sonja acrylic paints, board, brushes, 23 carat gold leaf, and miscellaneous painting aids, as well as daily lunch and snacks). The retreat would also make a great Christmas gift for a loved one.
