This Lenten season, the Education for Ministry (EfM) team will be offering a 2-week book study on Sue Monk Kidd’s memoir God’s Joyful Surprise on March 18 and March 25 from 6:30-8:30 PM. Participants should purchase or borrow the book and have chapters 1-8 read by March 18 and chapters 9-16 read by March 25.
God’s Joyful Surprise offers a conversational and engaging account of Kidd’s transition from the hectic daily life of a Christian mother, wife, nurse, and volunteer to discovering what it truly means to abide in God. Kidd describes being so busy with activities that she had no time to appreciate God’s love and transformative presence, ultimately leaving her feeling broken and empty. Reading the spiritual memoirs of faithful people along their journey of faith invites us to reflect on our own journey of faith—our own journey with God. They offer a profound exploration of the soul’s journey, delving into questions of faith, purpose, and the search for meaning. Memoirs often serve as a mirror, reflecting the innermost longings and aspirations shared by many. At the same time, they can challenge readers to expand their understanding of spirituality and explore new perspectives.
