CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL'S SEARCH FOR A NEW DEAN
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS...

  1. What is a Search Committee?

The Search Committee is a representative group of parishioners appointed by the Cathedral Vestry operating under a charge from that body to coordinate a comprehensive search for the person God is calling to become the next Rector and Dean of Christ Church Cathedral.

The Committee's tasks include collection of extensive data on the parish's perceptions of itself, its aspirations, its concerns and its expectation of our next Dean.  Information gathered from parishioners by a variety of means will be processed by the Committee and developed into a Parish Profile for the benefit of candidates for the Deanship, and for the instruction and guidance of Committee members seeking the best match between Cathedral requirements and candidate credentials.

In due course, the Committee will evaluate applications, interview selected candidates on their home turf and locally, and ultimately recommend one name to the Vestry, which then decides whether to issue a call.

The Search Committee is keenly aware of our dependence upon, and responsibility to, the parish, and of our need to maintain a transparency of process insofar as respect for confidentiality permits.  We humbly ask for parishioners' continued prayers, views, counsel, cooperation and support, as together we seek to discern God's will for our Cathedral leadership.

  2. Who is on the Search Committee?

Members of the Committee represent many different constituencies of Cathedral life and a wide range of ages, backgrounds, occupations, expertise, length of parish membership, and particularly experience at the Cathedral.

  3. How can I contribute to the search process?

The committee is eager to hear from all parishioners.  To that end, it will host up to three "Town Hall" meetings on three consecutive Sundays at the Church School hour, during which time parishioners will be invited to offer their views on various aspects of parish life and on how our next Rector/Dean may address them.

Additionally, members of the Search Committee will conduct a random telephone survey of a representative number of parishioners.

Finally, all parishioners will be urged to complete a questionnaire about the state, direction and objectives of the Cathedral, and about the human, pastoral, theological, homiletic and liturgical ideas to be modeled in our next Rector/Dean.

Congregants are, of course, encouraged to contact individual members of the Committee with opinions and advice.

  4. When will the Cathedral have a new Rector/Dean?

The Committee estimates that our process will take up to a year, perhaps slightly longer.  We intend to move as expeditiously as possible without sacrificing the need for thoroughness in representing and preparing the parish, and for prayerful deliberation in evaluating candidates.

  5. Who is leading the Cathedral now?

The Reverend Canon Anne Stevenson is our Priest-in-Charge while the search proceeds.  She is ably assisted by the Reverend Canon Geoffrey Butcher and the Reverend Canon Matthew Corkern and a number of priest associates, and by the Wardens and Vestry.

Our large administrative and clerical staff continues to keep the shop running smoothly day by day.

  6. Does the Bishop have a role in the Cathedral's search for a new Rector/Dean?

Yes.  The Bishop must approve the Cathedral's choice of its next Dean.

As consultant to the Search Committee, Bishop Bauerschmidt has appointed his Canon to the Ordinary, the Reverend Pamela Snare, who has carefully explained to the Vestry and to the Committee the steps we are expected to follow in searching for our new Rector/Dean.

Candidates selected for close investigation by the Committee will be vetted by the Bishop's office before contact is initiated, and finalists will meet with the Bishop on their visits to Nashville.

Relations between the Search Committee and the Bishop and his staff are now, and expected to remain, cordial and mutually complementary.

  7. Where does the Committee find candidates for the Deanship?

A primary source is the Church Deployment Office, a unit of the national church that maintains files of employment opportunities and of priests seeking new positions, and, when asked, produces computer-generated matches between them.  The Search Committee will request the assistance of the CDO and then follow up with plausible candidates.

Additionally, our Bishop will probably provide names to the Committee, as will priests in our diocese and elsewhere.

Candidates may nominate themselves in response to advertisements in Episcopal publications.

And, in due course, the Committee will solicit nominations from Cathedral parishioners, on a form to be provided.

  8. Why are candidates' names confidential?

Until very late in the search process, candidates' names must remain confidential within the Search Committee.  This is less a matter of secrecy than of privacy.  Most, if not all, of our candidates will be employed in other parishes where disclosure of their candidacies might be embarrassing, disruptive, even damaging.  While respecting the privacy concerns of our candidates, the Search Committee will keep the parish informed at every step of our general progress.

  9. What are the costs of searching?

The Vestry has allocated a modest budget to the Search Committee to cover the costs of advertising, of selected members' travel to the parishes of finalists and/or their travel to Nashville, and of administrative tasks.

  10. Can Cathedral clergy be candidates for the Deanship?

No.  Like many others, our diocese forbids current clergypersons employed at the Cathedral from becoming candidates for the next Deanship.

How will we be informed of the Search Committee's progress?

The Search Committee will provide appropriate updates in the weekly Cathedral bulletin, in the Cornerstone newsletter and in a link devoted to the search on the Cathedral website.  Of course, Committee members will make themselves available to parishioners for questions and discussion.
