Centering Prayer
Psalm 46:10 Be still and know that I am God
We invite you to join the Cathedral Centering Prayer groups as we sit still together to know God and one another through this method of silent prayer in the Christian contemplative tradition. Throughout the world individuals and small faith communities committed to living the contemplative dimension of the Gospel in everyday life pause for silent communion with God in the practice of Centering Prayer.
The Christian contemplative dimension manifests itself in an ever-deepening union with the living Christ and the practical caring for others that flows from that relationship. Centering Prayer facilitates a movement from more active modes of prayer - verbal, discursive, or affective prayer - to receptive prayer of resting in God.
Centering Prayer is meant to enrich and complement other forms of prayer, not exclude or replace them. We invite you to join us to explore and learn more about Centering Prayer, to experience in community this contemplative practice, and to join in brief conversations about readings on contemplative practice. Newcomers are welcome at all gatherings of Centering Prayer.
The Cathedral Centering Prayer groups gather weekly year round with a simple format that includes reading an excerpt from the writings of various authors (Thomas Keating, Thomas Merton, Henri Nouwen, Cynthia Bourgault, Teresa of Avila, and others), brief conversation around the reading, and a twenty minute silent sit. Please contact Laura Copeland, Jean Jackson Hastings or Mimi Shimmin for additional information.
