ARTS SERIES

Bachanalia 2007
K. Manz
In 2003, Christ Church inaugurated a regular series of outstanding offerings of music, theater, art and dance.  Our purpose was to enrich the spiritual lives of all who attended.  We also wished to celebrate God’s gift of creativity by providing space and support to local artists to present their work to the community and by offering hands-on workshops.

This program was recognized in a recent article in the Tennessean (July 2008 God and Art by Bill Friskics-Warren) for its contribution to religious life in Nashville.

Musical performances have included varied genres: classical, jazz, and pop. Organ, jazz trumpet, duo piano, strings, percussion, and vocal ensembles have provided variety and interest. Among the many artists that have been featured are Riders in the Sky, Rod McGaha, David Hurd, Christian Teal , the Blair String Quartet, organist John Scott,  Nielson & Young, and Boston Camerata

BACHanalia, an annual J.S. Bach Festival held in the spring, is a highlight of the year with Nashville musicians donating their services in a six-hour mini-marathon of continuous music. Read what the local press (Nashville Scene and Ms Cheap ) have written about the 2010 Bachanalia.  Theater offerings have included full scale productions of God's Trombones, The Book of Job, Mass Appeal, The Guys, Don Juan in Hell, and View from the Underside, as well as staged readings and poetry readings. Hands-on workshops in Icon painting, liturgical textile design and floral design foster artistic expression.

This series is organized and coordinated by the Cultural Arts Committee (Chair: Susan Dupont: click to email)
