Blessing of the Animals 2006
Warren Westcott
The Civic Committee seeks to establish Christ Church Cathedral as Nashville’s predominant nonsectarian spiritual gathering place to mark important occasions in community and public affairs. The committee initiates and supports events of significance in the public life of the metropolitan Nashville community. The committee’s focus embraces citizenship along with broader aspects of civil society and community life and engagement.
The Civic Committee sponsors celebrations, commemorative services and political forums. In the past, the committee has organized services to commemorate Veteran's Day, World AIDS Day, and Memorial Day. Together with the Cultural Arts Committee, a Black History Month music or theater performance is sponsored highlighting the contributions of African Americans to American culture. The annual Blessing of the Animals has expanded to become a festival and educational event with participation by animal welfare organizations as well as pet-owners from all over the city.
The kinds of activities the Civic Committee undertakes offer an excellent entrée to metro area residents, particularly the growing downtown Nashville population. The mayoral candidates’ forum the committee hosted is one example of a broadly appealing neighborhood activity as is the Blessing of the Animals.
