Arts Series 2008-2009
Music, Film, Art, Gardens in 2008-09 Season An Invitation to the Community From J.S. Bach to spirituals to country music. From the organ to strings to winds. From soloists to choirs to chamber ensembles. From Icon Writing to the Art of the Garden. This covers some of the wide array of art and music to be experienced during the 2008-09 Sacred Space for the City Arts Series at Christ Church Cathedral in downtown Nashville.
The season kicks off on Friday, September 19 at 7:30 PM with Christian Teal, first violinist with the Blair String Quartet, performing the second concert to complete his performance of all the Unaccompanied Partitas and Sonatas for Violin by J.S. Bach. Teal’s appearance is co-sponsored with the Blair School of Music. Monthly offerings will follow, including a special celebration of the 5th Anniversary of the Cathedral’s Lively-Fulcher organ by Cathedral organist Michael Velting, a trio concert of organ, flute and trumpet, and a performance by French virtuoso Daniel Roth,current organist of St. Sulpice in Paris, a concert sponsored by Lois and Peter Fyfe. Special Christmas music will be offered in late November and early December, including the Nashville Early Music Ensemble, the annual Festival of Lessons and Carols sung by the Cathedral Choir and Choristers, and a Messiah Sing-In for the community led by Belle Meade Baroque, an ensemble specializing in historically informed performance. Seasonal music of a different ilk will rock the halls with Nashville Unlimited, Dave Pomeroy’s annual benefit for Room in the Inn, The Fisk Jubilee Singers will bring spirituals on February 13 and the third annual BACHanalia, a marathon celebration of the music of J.S. Bach, heard in both conventional and unconventional ways, is set for March 27. Belmont University choral ensembles and the chamber players of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Magnet High School complete the . A new genre added to the season this year is the art of film. On November 14, SCORE_UNDERSCORE!, a collaborative project with the Nashville Composers Association, will present short films screened with original music, performed live. The Nashville Chamber Players, along with Jeffrey Smith from Grace Cathedral, San Francisco, John Lucianno from St. Olaf College and Gregg Bunn of Nashville will join Christ Church Cathedral organists Velting and Jon Johnson and the Cathedral choirs to present Evensong liturgies and preludes throughout the year. New Contemplative Concerts will be offered in October and May by the Rolin Mains Trio with a hour-long mix of jazz and contemporary improvisation on piano, bass and percussion. Renowned icon painter Teresa Harrison will lead a week-long workshop March 2—6, exploring the spiritual process of creating a religious icon. Other art offerings include a demonstration of liturgical floral design in March and a container gardening workshop in April. The season will conclude with the First Annual Christ Church Cathedral Art of the Garden Tour on Sunday, May 31. Nine outstanding gardens in the Richland and Belle Meade neighborhoods (some previously featured in Southern Living and Home and Garden) will be open to view. The tour will include live music and open-air painters in selected gardens as well as light refreshments and a plant sale. Rain date is Sunday June 6.
