Liturgy Committees

Acolytes

The acolytes serve at the altar during Sunday morning services, special services, weddings and funerals.

There are three roles that acolytes serve at a typical Eucharist at the Cathedral.

Torch Bearers carry torches in the processional into the Nave, in the Gospel procession, and in the recessional at the end of the service. Detailed instructions on being a Torch Bearer are located HERE.

The Second Server carries the second cross in the processional and the recessional, distributes the alms basins (or offering plates) to the ushers and collects them after the offertory, and handles hand washing of the Celebrant after the Eucharist.

The First Server is the most senior acolyte at the service. They are Crucifer (carry the first cross) in the processional and recessional. During the Gospel procession, they hold the book for the Deacon as he or she reads the Gospel. They set the altar with the Sacristan for the Eucharist and they wash the hands of the Celebrant before the Eucharist.

Complete acolyte procedures are located HERE.

We also have an on-line photo album showing how acolytes are to look and act during a service.
