Getting Involved - In Our World

Global Missions Committee

The Global Missions Committee provides opportunities for Cathedral parishioners to enter into partnerships with other Christians in other countries.  Believing we are called to express our faith through service, the committee fosters mutually empowering relationships that allow the people of Christ Church Cathedral of every age, income or background to share their gifts, talents, service and faith with the wider world.

For more information, please contact Ken Penegar or call 615.383.4505.

All of the following projects listed on this page are sponsored by the Global Missions Committee.

Acacia Foundation Orphanage

The Acacia Foundation supports orphaned children in the rural area of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. Sixteen children, ages 6 - 17, currently live in a newly constructed dormitory type facility, complete with running water, electricity, separate sleeping and bath/shower facilities.

Acacia Foundation funds food, school uniforms, school transportation, and a small stipend for live-in caregivers. Acacia Foundation provides AIDS treatment through our partnership with McCord Hospital in Durban.

Plans are currently under way for a second orphanage to be built in Nhlangwini on 25 acres of land donated by Zulu royalty, HRH Prince Dlamini. Long range plans for this facility include a clinic, job training center, and a school.

Bolivia - The Amistad Mission

The Amistad Mission in Bolivia consists of a Children's Village in the city of Cochabamba and a Medical Clinic, Day Care, and School in Aramasi, a village in the high Andes mountains. Bolivia is the poorest country in South America, and the people in the village of Aramasi have been among the most impoverished in the world. The Children’s Village operates eight cottages for younger children and three Youth Houses. Christ Church Cathedral sponsors one of these cottages. In Cochabamba, a mission-center house, La Morada, was built to provide a place for U.S. visitors and missionaries to stay and to serve as a retreat center for Bolivians. The Cathedral sponsors adult and youth pilgrimages to Bolivia periodically.

Chris King has recently become the Executive Director of Amistad Mission. Click HERE to learn more.

Please contact Chris King or  Walker Mathews to learn more about Amistad.

Community Investment and Economic Justice Committee

The Community Investment and Economic Justice Committee (CIEJ) was formed in 2007 to increase awareness of the benefits of and need for "community investing" not only for the communities in the Diocese of Tennessee, but on a global level. CIEJ provides opportunities to participate in community investing and empower the less fortunate to gain dignity and self-sufficiency through participation in their local economies.

St. George's Church, Baghdad

Global Missions of Christ Church includes prayers and financial support for the last active Anglican church in Iraq. St. George’s Church, Baghdad, has several hundred worshippers among the people of that very dangerous city. It also provides humanitarian assistance every week to scores of people from all faiths, including a clinic and food and clothing distribution.

Christ Church Cathedral, among others in the United States and around the world, contributes funds through the Foundation for Relief and Rehabilitation in the Middle East. We began this outreach effort in 2008 and have budgeted funds for 2011 for it as well.

You are invited to explore the life of this brave congregation through a three minute video.
