Bill Countryman is a scholar, teacher, poet, and gardener. He was born in Oklahoma City and received degrees from the University of Chicago and The General Theological Seminary. He is a priest of the Episcopal Church, having served congregations in Oklahoma, Ohio, Illinois, Missouri and Texas, and currently assisting at Good Shepherd Church in Berkeley, California. He is Professor Emeritus of Biblical Studies at The Church Divinity School of the Pacific. He is known for writings that range in subject from spirituality to academic studies. His next book, forthcoming in January 2010, is Lovesongs and Reproaches, a work that draws together prayer, scripture, and the natural world to create a celebration of God’s love even in the face of the reality of evil.

Countryman describes this program as follows: “The goal of Christian life isn’t keeping your nose clean. It lies in the joy of the saints in the glory of God’s presence, in being part of that number. These presentations are about encountering God again in the company of the saints. We may find them in the scriptures, in the saints of the church’s calendar, in all those personal saints, known only to those of us who actually intersected with them in our own lives, and also through non-human agents of God’s glory and love. (Even the church calendar includes some angels; most of us also know times and places and other creatures that speak to us of God.) This is not a how-to course, but an opportunity to take a new look at things you already know and a reminder to keep traveling with the saints as our surest path to being truly numbered with them”
