Adult Education

The adult program at Christ Church offers a variety of courses for parishioners to grow in their faith.  Classes take place on Sunday morning, Wednesday evenings or throughout the week.  Special intergenerational events also take place during the church year.

Sunday Morning Programs

The following adult classes meet from September to May during the Sunday School Hour, from 9:45am to 10:45am each Sunday.

Focused and Faithful  - This class features lectures by a variety of speakers on Biblical, social and spiritual themes. Speakers will include priests, rabbis, and professors.

Journey in Faith  - Led by the Rev. Anne Stevenson. This class is a modern adaptation of an ancient church process by which adults were prepared for entry into Christian faith and life. The class focuses on inquiring into the Christian faith as it is lived out at Christ Church Cathedral, by the Episcopal Church, and in the Anglican Communion. Topics covered in the class include “Finding Your Way Through a Christ Church Eucharist with Prayer Book, Hymnal and Service Leaflet”, Reflections on Eucharist, Reflections on Baptism, Church History and other basics of the Episcopal faith. Participation in this class may also prepare adults for Confirmation in the Episcopal Church; Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows for those already confirmed; or Reception from the Roman and Eastern Catholic Churches.

Contemplative Prayer Class - Led by Bill Hooper. The Contemplative Prayer Class practices Centering prayer - a prayer of the heart, a prayer of simplicity, a prayer of faith, a prayer of simple regard; a method of reducing the obstacles to the gift of contemplative prayer and of facilitating the development of habits conducive to responding to the inspirations of the Spirit. The principal text for those interested in contemplative prayer is Thomas Keating’s book, Open Mind, Open Heart.

Young Adult Bible Study – Led by the Reverend Gene Manning. This informal class provides fellowship and group discussion around the Sunday lectionary texts. Participants delve into the meaning of the scripture and see connections to their daily lives.

Companions in Christ are small spiritual formational groups of 6-10 persons who meet together to grow in the understanding of Christ. Spiritual formation is at the core of the meetings. Throughout the course, participants practice different prayer styles, explore Scripture in new and exciting ways, discern spiritual gifts and talents, learn new ways of “holy listening”, reflect and journal daily to come to a consciousness of God in their lives. The first year Companions meet for 28 weeks on a day and time selected by the group. The Way of Discernment will offered for those who have completed the first course. You can sign up by contacting Becky Rochford.

EfM students learn how to think theologically, deepen their faith and their understanding of our Christian heritage, and gain a new confidence to be Christ's minister in the Church.

Students sign up one year at a time for this four-year program, which covers the basics of a theological education in the Old and New Testaments, church history, liturgy, and theology.

EfM classes meet once a week from September to May under the guidance of trained mentors. Groups meet on Wednesday mornings or on Tuesday evenings.  The program grants a certificate at the completion of the four years and 18 Continuing Education Units for each year's work.
